Pickleball and Other Court Sports in Concord!

From the state of the art sports fields, Olympic sized swimming pools and high-tech courts. What most people who visit or who reside in the area aren’t aware of, is that Concord, California hosts the largest pickleball tournament in the area!

The 2nd Annual ENGAGE Golden State Championship Pickleball Tournament will be happening at Willow Pass Community Park Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 8:00 am from July 27th-29th. Participants will be competing for a $10,000 cash prize, and spectators will enjoy viewing the games that will be divided by age and skill.

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines aspects of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. Pickleball originated in the 1960’s and has grown in popularity as an American sport. The game is played with a wooden paddle and a whiffle ball among 2 or 4 players. The game came to be one summer day when Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum returned home after a day of golf and found their families bored on a Saturday afternoon. With few items but a lot of creativity, they lowered a badminton net, fashioned some wood into paddles, grabbed a whiffle ball and created this beloved sport.

Other Outdoor Court Sports In Concord

Concord offers many outdoor arenas for athletes and spectators to gather and enjoy some good ole competition. There are Bocce courts at John F. Baldwin Park, Newhall Community Park, and Iron Horse Park, where people can compete in leagues or just play for fun. Concord has three locations for tennis courts; Willow Pass Community Park, Pine Hollow Courts, and at the Concord Community Park. The City of Concord Parks and Recreation Department also offers tennis camps, classes, and various programs during the seasons. Stop by El Dorado Middle School Play Fields for a fun game of sand volleyball on one of the two courts available. Rick Seers Neighborhood Park provides a half basketball court and John F. Baldwin offers a full court. There is no shortage of sports to enjoy here in Concord and you have a whole summer to find out which is your favorite!
